Although you may have heard about the great benefits of duct cleaning for your HVAC system and health, you might still wonder how often cleaning should take place. How can you tell when your indoor air quality is not as good as you think it is?
Unexplained Allergies or Illness
If you notice a scratchy throat, nasal congestion or itchy eyes worsen as the hours pass at work, but magically disappear as soon as you step outside or go home, it might be time to get ducts at the office tested. If ducts at home are dirty, family members may experience more severe symptom. While sleeping they might be inhaling dust, mould particles, bacteria, and/or dander from pets. If symptoms worsen when it is not cold or allergy season, or when the HVAC system is running, your ducts may be to blame.
Air ducts are sweet hiding places for rodents, cockroaches, and other unpleasant pests. Even if you have controlled the infestation, dander and feces left behind expose you to allergens and bacteria. Even if your home or office has been thoroughly cleaned and there appears to be no trace of the pests, the remnants of their “visit” could be hidden in your HVAC system.
Hints from Outside
If you regularly clean the outside of your vents, but see dust blowing out when you run your heater or air conditioner, have your ducts tested. This is definitely a sign that debris is inside your system. Similarly, if you see mould growing on any of the outside components, the problem is likely a lot worse inside of the ducts where it is dark.
If you’re experiencing any of these scenarios, your indoor air quality might not be safe. Call Dial One Duct Cleaning at (416) 896-4799 to arrange for duct testing. Your lungs will thank you for it!
